It’s Not Up To You
The young man was 20 years old and had already been in two ERs that day. I was the third doctor to tell him the same thing: “Your tests are normal. You’re having an anxiety attack.” He nodded. He’d been told the same thing twice already. The worst part was that he had no idea what he was anxious about. He was just afraid.
Never before in my entire 15-year career as an ER doctor have I seen fear-related symptoms like I have in the last year or so. People are more worried than ever, and it’s affecting their health. Most of the time they’re not even sure what they’re worried about.
Most of us, including followers of Jesus, are walking around with an overwhelming sense of worry. Fear has taken a hold of our lives like never before. You might be feeling the chest-squeezing, mind-fogging sense of fear clutching your life right now. I’ve got good news for you.
There has only ever been one antidote to fear. That antidote is not in your coming up with more courage. It is not in positive self-talk or greater accountability and church attendance. The only antidote to fear has always been the perfect love of Jesus. It is his perfect love that casts out fear. No other solution will work.
Are you struggling with fear? You might need an infusion of Christ’s love. He who loved you enough to die for you is in control of every detail of your life. He sees you and knows what you’re going through. His love is not threatened by your mistakes and your bad choices. His love is steadfast and unstoppable.
You don’t have to be afraid anymore. You’re going to be ok.
